PREPARATION AND APPLICATIONS OF QUANTUM-DEGENERATE COLD ATOMIC/MOLECULAR GASES
Research Training Network WITH THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF EU, WITHIN THE 5th FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME
Contract No: HPRN-CT-2000-00125

OBJECTIVES

Advances in the fields of atom optics, degenerate quantum gases and Bose-Einstein Condesation (BEC). The Network combines together on a common project expertise on BEC with alkalis, BEC characterization, BEC with metastable gases, cold Fermi gases, atom laser. Because the wave-mechanical properties of the atoms are amplified to levels at which they can be observed and manipulated directly, BEC atomic assemblies are particularly interesting and useful for the study of macroscopic quantum effects. This represents one of the main objectives of the project. In BEC, interactions between the particles have only a very small effect on the atomic behaviour and the ultracold atomic condensate are very sensitively controlled by fields of very modest strenght, including laser fields. One objective of the Project is to manipulate and control the BEC interaction through external fields.
